The Good News First
The UAE has one of the most tourist-friendly visa policies in the world. Over 100 nationalities receive visa-on-arrival access, and the recent expansion of the visa system means there are more options than ever for extended stays, digital nomads, and repeat visitors.
That said, the system has enough complexity β multiple visa types, varying durations, and nationality-specific rules β that it's easy to get confused. This guide covers everything you need to know for 2026.
Important disclaimer: Visa regulations change frequently. While this guide is current as of March 2026, always verify requirements with the UAE embassy or consulate in your country before travelling.

Common Questions & Edge Cases
Visa Overstay
Overstaying your visa incurs a fine of AED 100 per day for the first period, increasing after that. There's typically a 10-day grace period after visa expiry. Always extend your visa before it expires β extensions can be processed at any GDRFA service centre or online.
Israeli Passport Holders
Since the Abraham Accords (2020), Israeli passport holders can enter the UAE with visa-on-arrival access for 90 days.
Passport Stamps
The UAE uses biometric electronic entry systems. Physical passport stamps are still provided on request at immigration counters, but e-gates use digital records.
Travelling with Medication
Certain medications that are legal in other countries are controlled substances in the UAE (including some common painkillers and anti-anxiety medications). Check the UAE Ministry of Health's controlled substances list before travelling, and carry a prescription for any medication.
Visa Tips for Smooth Entry
- βPrint your visa if you applied online. While digital copies are usually accepted, a printed copy avoids potential issues at immigration
- βPassport validity matters β 6 months minimum. Airlines may refuse boarding if your passport expires sooner
- βReturn ticket β immigration may ask to see proof of onward travel, even for visa-on-arrival nationalities
- βDress code β while there's no formal requirement, respectful attire makes immigration processing smoother
- βAlcohol declaration β you may bring limited duty-free alcohol (check current allowances). Declare it if asked
