Dubai's Other Playground: The Water
Everyone knows Dubai for its desert. But here's what seasoned travellers understand: the Arabian Gulf coastline is just as thrilling, and far less crowded. While tourist buses queue at the malls and desert safari camps, Dubai's waterfront offers some of the most exhilarating activities available anywhere in the world β with the bonus of doing them against a skyline that looks like it was designed by a science fiction artist.
From the simple joy of a jet ski carving through turquoise water to the absurd fun of being propelled 15 metres into the air by a flyboard, Dubai's water sports scene has something for every comfort level and adrenaline threshold.
The Complete Water Sports Menu
Jet Skiing
The most popular water sport in Dubai, and for good reason. There's something viscerally satisfying about throttling a powerful machine across flat, warm water with the Burj Al Arab growing larger in your field of vision.
What to expect: Guided jet ski tours typically last 30β60 minutes, following a set route past major landmarks. You'll ride your own jet ski (or share with a partner), with a guide leading the group.
Key routes:
- βBurj Al Arab Loop β Past the iconic hotel, JBR beach, and back through Marina
- βPalm Jumeirah Circuit β Around the fronds of the Palm Island
- βDubai Canal Route β Through Business Bay and past Downtown
Pricing: AED 300β600 per jet ski (30β60 min)
Who it's for: Anyone aged 16+ (or younger riders as passengers)
Skill needed: None β a 5-minute briefing is all it takes
Flyboarding
If you've ever wanted to feel like Iron Man, flyboarding is your moment. Water pressure from a jet ski engine is channelled through a board strapped to your feet, propelling you up to 15 metres above the water. Beginners typically hover at 2β5 metres β which is still spectacularly fun.
What to expect: A 30-minute session includes instruction and practice time. Most people can fly independently within 10 minutes.
Pricing: AED 350β500 per session
Who it's for: Anyone in reasonable physical fitness, ages 16+
Skill needed: Balance and willingness to get very wet
Parasailing
Float 150 metres above the Arabian Gulf, tethered to a speedboat, with panoramic views of the entire Dubai coastline. It's serene, it's scenic, and it's the perfect activity for people who want altitude without intensity.
Pricing: AED 300β500 per person (single) or AED 450β700 per pair (tandem)
Who it's for: Anyone aged 6+, including non-swimmers (you don't touch the water unless you want to)
Wakeboarding and Water Skiing
For the athletically inclined, Dubai offers excellent wakeboarding conditions β flat, warm water with few waves makes for consistent pulls. Beginners learn on starter boards with patient instructors.
Pricing: AED 250β400 per 20-minute session
Who it's for: Anyone interested in board sports, ages 12+
Kayaking and Paddleboarding
The gentler end of the spectrum. Kayaking through Dubai Marina's skyscraper canyon is a surreal experience β the reflections alone are worth the effort. Paddleboarding at sunrise is increasingly popular for its combination of exercise and mindfulness.
Pricing: AED 100β200 per hour
Who it's for: All ages and fitness levels
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
Dubai's artificial reefs and clear waters offer surprisingly good diving conditions. Popular sites include the dive platforms off Jumeirah Beach and the wreck dive at Zainab Ship near Fujairah (a day trip).
Pricing: AED 400β800 per dive (certified); AED 500β900 for discovery dives (beginners)
Who it's for: All levels β discover dives require zero experience
Banana Boat and Donut Rides
Pure, chaotic fun. A inflatable banana or donut is towed behind a speedboat while you hold on for dear life, laughing, screaming, and inevitably flying off into the warm Gulf waters.
Pricing: AED 100β200 per person per ride
Who it's for: Groups, families, anyone who doesn't take themselves too seriously
